John’s funeral on Saturday drew over 500 mourners, many of them bicyclists. A ride has been organized in memory of John on Fathers Day, this Sunday, June 21 starting at 7:30 AM. They’re planning an easy pace (i.e., 17-18mph avg), no drop ride starting and ending at Plaza de Lago in Wilmette. The ride winds up the north shore to Lake Bluff and will follow one of the routes that John rode many times over the last 20 years. A map of the proposed route is at:
The full route will be around 40 miles.

***********UPDATE************

Today, Friday the 30th and Monday the 2nd are the final two days to get your information to me regarding the MC200. You can reply directly to the email notification. Please just fill in the below information. If you are not interested, please let me know with a simple, “That’s a crazy relay, and I’m not interested!”

Thanks!
Bethany

*******************************

The deadline for sending your info in to me for the MC200 is quickly approaching. If you would like to enter the relay, you have until close of business on Monday, February 2nd — but if you’re already definitely going to enter, I would appreciate it if you could please supply the following information as soon as possible:

First Name:
Last Name:
Mobile Phone Number:
Age:
Male/Female:
T Shirt Size:
Full Team’s Members (if you have a full team):
Full Team’s Captain (act as liaison and take care of team’s registration):
Partial Team members (not yet a full team but want to be on a team with somone specifically):
Average 10K time:

As a reminder:

“The MC200 is a 200-mile running relay race from Madison to Chicago. The 200-mile course is divided into 36 Legs that teams of up to 12 members will navigate over a two day period. Teams will gather in Madison for the start of the race, which is on Friday, June 12th. The relay begins with a “wave start”, commencing at 7:00 a.m. A group of teams will start the relay each hour thereafter, with the last group leaving at 4:00 p.m. Team start times will be assigned based on the estimated finish time that all team captains will submit prior to the race.

You do not need 12 runners to field a team - many teams do it with fewer. Teams of 6 runners or less will compete in the “Ultra Division”. The distances of each of the 36 legs of the course varies from leg to leg. And, with a team of 12, each runner will run three separate legs, including one at night. Thus, each team can accommodate runners of various abilities. On average, runners with a team of 12 can expect to run a total of approximately 15 miles for the entire event. Obviously, the smaller the team the more you can expect to run.

Runners will transport themselves through the course using two team support vans, with each van carrying half of the team. Runners must follow a set rotation, which is submitted prior to the race, and must be followed until their team finishes. As runners complete their assigned legs, their support van will be waiting at the “Transfer Area” to pick them up and drop off the next runner. Each sixth leg is designated as a “Van Transfer Area”, where the wristband which runners pass to each other throughout the relay is transferred from one support van to the next. The support vans, in essence, “leapfrog” each other through the course. For more information, visit the website at www.mc200.com

As an aside, and not part of the MC200, some folks are talking about biking up to Madison on Thursday, June 11 before the start of the MC200, then of course participating in the relay run the next day. We will be looking for some local business to possibly support the bike ride to Madison. Many are also talking about combining the bike ride to Madison with the MC200 and then the North Shore Half Marathon on Sunday, June 14th. Whatever you choose, the weekend can be as EPIC as you make it!

Running Away Multisport has agreed to some sort of “sponsorship” for the MC200 teams that originate from this email. Preliminarily, we are talking about fielding several teams –with each team wearing the same jersey but in a different color. Carlins’ team has already requested pink (makes him look thinner).

A small social gathering on Monday, January 5th revealed that we have many interested people and still have ample time to field our teams and register for the event. So we’ve extended the deadline: If you, or anyone you know, is committed (not “interested”) to participating in the MC200 (not necessarily the bike ride or the North Shore Half Marathon) please send an email response to Bethany Johnson or Joe Lotus by end of business on Monday, February 2.”
